About Karen Klimowski

Karen Klimowski serves as the Development Diplomat in Residence for the Western United States, where she develops new partnerships and leads outreach and recruitment activities for the USAID.

Ms. Klimowski is a Senior Foreign Service Officer with more than 25 years of experience in international development and in senior leadership and health officer roles in eight countries. Most recently, Ms. Klimowski served at USAID/India as USAID’s Deputy Mission Director from July 2021 to July 2023, leading a staff of 130 in partnering with India to tackle complex development challenges; and from April 2019 to July 2021 establishing the Indo-Pacific Office, focusing on South Asia. Additionally, Karen served in Indonesia, Kenya, Uganda, and the Philippines, focusing on development programming in health, education, economic empowerment, good governance, environment, and clean energy.

Prior to joining USAID, Ms. Klimowski worked for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia; Zimbabwe, and Malawi; the Orange County Health Care Agency in Santa Ana, California; and various non-governmental organizations. She started her career in development as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Ms. Klimowski holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physiology from the University of California, San Diego; and a Master’s in Public Health from San Diego State University. She is from Santa Cruz, California.
