Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Voices at Unicorn Theatre
Join us for a night where culture, community, and bold new stories collide in celebration of AAPI heritage. In partnership with the National Association of Asian American Professionals - Kansas City (NAAAP KC), Unicorn Theatre proudly presents an unforgettable AAPI Celebration Night, set against the powerful backdrop of The Heart Sellers by Lloyd Suh.
Please join us if you can. Not only will you be celebrating our AAPI Community and enjoying a powerful and funny new play, but your attendance will send a strong message that authentic stories about the AAPI experience are important, needed, and can draw an audience. By showing up, we create the space for future productions by us, for us, and with us! Be a space maker.
From the moment the doors open, you'll experience a taste of Kansas City's vibrant AAPI community:
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM:
Indulge in a Pop-Up of AAPI-owned food & drink vendors. Savor the rich flavors of local culinary talents, explore unique offerings, and connect with fellow attendees as we honor the diversity and creativity of Kansas City's AAPI community.
7:30 PM – 9:00 PM:
Be captivated by the performance of The Heart Sellers, a deeply moving and humor-filled play that follows two young women as they navigate the complexities of immigrant life in 1970s America. Luna and Jane—both recent immigrants from Korea and the Philippines—strike up an unexpected friendship over a Thanksgiving dinner they’ll never forget. Through laughter, tears, and plenty of wine, they dream of new possibilities while wrestling with the question: What does it mean to make a home in an unfamiliar world?
9:00 PM – 9:30 PM:
Stay for a post-show Talk Back where you can engage directly with the cast and creative team about the themes of the play—identity, immigration, and the universal struggle to belong. It’s a conversation that speaks to the heart of today’s social issues, providing a space for reflection, connection, and action.
About The Heart Sellers:
Written by award-winning playwright Lloyd Suh, The Heart Sellers takes us back to the pivotal moment in 1973 when the landmark Hart-Celler Act reshaped immigration in America. Luna and Jane—two women in their twenties—find themselves facing the challenges of assimilation, loneliness, and the hope for a better future. As they bond over a less-than-perfect Thanksgiving meal, this funny yet poignant play reminds us of the courage it takes to leave one’s home in search of another.
In true Unicorn Theatre fashion, this night isn’t just a performance—it’s an event. It’s a chance to uplift and celebrate the voices that too often go unheard, while sharing a story that is funny, real, and deeply human.
Tickets start at just $52, or you can Pay What U Can. Seating is limited, so secure your spot for this incredible celebration of AAPI culture and stories.
